PerformancePoint Server - ‘BI for the Masses’
PerformancePoint Server (PPS) is the new flagship Business Intelligence and Performance Management (BI/PM) product from Microsoft. Released at the end of September 2007, PPS incorporates three main areas of functionality: planning, analysis and monitoring. Building on the data warehousing and analytical capabilities of SQL Server 2005, PPS enables users to manipulate data in familiar environments such as Excel and browser based interfaces. The reporting and analytics tools in PPS are designed to be used by a broad base of users in any organisation, not just power users and analysts.

Planning
Many finance professionals have experienced the pain of unstructured budgeting and planning processes based on a variety of spreadsheets, documents, data extracts etc. The planning functionality in PPS allows for the streamlining of such processes by developing centrally controlled models for Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting. Data is collected via input forms which are designed and deployed using Excel. Workflows can then be created for the submission, approval and annotation process. Finally, reports can be consumed via Excel or SQL Server Reporting Services. To read more about Performance Point Planning functionality click here.

Analysis
Analytical tools within Performance Point facilitate data visualisation, reporting, drill down, drill across and graphical presentation of data. Users can also easily customise their own personalised dashboards or access shared corporate or departmental dashboards using a browser. Monitoring
The monitoring capabilities of PPS enable actual performance to be tracked against corporate plans and goals. Using familiar techniques such as scorecarding and traffic lighting, users can see their data translated into clearly understandable performance indicators.
